Profile: The 2-story, wood frame office building houses the environmental consulting firm New England Environmental, Inc. Interior finishes feature exposed parallel-strand wood columns and beams, bamboo flooring and cabinets, and no-VOC products. The landscape design is ideal for the cold weather climate, and includes native plantings, edible landscaping, rain gardens, bio-swales, step pools, bio-retention wetland, porous asphalt paving, and concrete grass pavers.
Energy-saving innovation: A 40 KW photovoltaic array on the roof and a pole mounted PV array in the parking area generate enough electricity for most of the building. The office, which is designed to be 62.8 percent more energy efficient than a base case building design, features 12-inch-thick walls. All lights have sensors and the high efficiency mini-split heating/cooling has individual office controls, providing further energy savings. The building is oriented in a linear east/west direction to maximize solar gain and about 90 percent of interior spaces have daylighting and outside views. All of NEE’s energy purchases are offset by RECs.
