Favorite New Green Building
The new headquarters for Evergreen, the Centre for Green Cities by Diamond + Schmitt Architects, at Evergreen Brick Works. The building is part of the larger adaptive-reuse of the historic Don Valley Brick Works that was led by DTAH. Look out for the red solar chimneys!
Must-see Historic Building
Toronto-Dominion Centre is a classic example of Mies van der Rohe’s interpretation of the International style. Located in the heart of the financial district, it links into the PATH – Toronto’s 28 kilometre underground walkway.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Architecture
For a shot of Art Deco, or if you are a fan of In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje, visit the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in the Beach. Public access is limited, but its southern facade and terraced landscape are particularly impressive.
Best Public Parks/Spaces
Sugar Beach, adjacent to the Redpath Sugar Factory at the foot of Jarvis Street, is a fun addition to the Water's Edge Promenade, and a great public space to enjoy Toronto’s inner harbour.
Museums/Galleries/Performing Arts
Take a stroll through the historic Distillery District, and stop at Balzac's Coffee before you walk through the Artscape Distillery Studios and Corkin Gallery. Or take in a performance at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.
Drinking, Dining, and Shopping
Stroll through Leslieville along Queen Street East, just past Broadview Avenue, for some unique places: Cocktails are excellent at The Comrade (758 Queen Street East), and so is the pizza at Lil' Baci (892 Queen Street East). For coffee with a bit of a west-coast vibe, stop at the Merchants of Green Coffee (2 Matilda Street); hidden away just north of Queen Street overlooking the Don Valley.
