Douglas Burnham is founder and principal of envelope Architecture + Design (envelope A+D), an award-winning collaborative design firm that advances new models of public and private space anchored in compelling visions of the emerging urban condition.

Favorite new green building:
The San Francisco Federal Building: not so new, but really the best in terms of architecture (better than the Piano Academy of Sciences in my opinion).

Must-see historic building:
Depends what you mean by historic…

San Francisco Art Institute Building -- the modern (1969) addition and raised public terrace by Paffard Keatinge-Clay

and by building...

The Golden Gate Bridge, 1937

Off-the-beaten-path architecture:
The Marin Headlands has amazing bunker architecture embedded into the sea swept hills overlooking the Pacific and next to the Golden Gate.

Best public parks/spaces:
Mint Plaza

PROXY (one of our projects)

Golden Gate Park - between the De Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences

Museums, galleries, and performing arts:
There's a not-to-be-missed show in the Architecture + Design Galleries in the SFMOMA: FIELD CONDITIONS by curator Joseph Becker.
Eli Ridgeway Gallery (near the SFMOMA)

The Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art

Drinking, dining, and shopping:
Okay, so here I have to pitch some of our projects:

Food:

Locanda, Delfina, Delfina Pizzeria 18th Street, Contigo

Coffee:

Four Barrel, Sight Glass, Ritual Roasters in the mission and at PROXY
