Profile: Enermodal Engineering is Canada’s largest green building consulting firm headquartered in what they claim is the country's first triple LEED Platinum office. Certified Platinum under LEED for New Construction, Commercial Interiors, and Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance, the headquarters is a model of sustainability.
Energy-saving strategy: The office is designed to use 82% less energy than a similar sized commercial building. Small heat pumps are connected by loops circulating refrigerant to meet demand, allowing the pumps to operate continuously at a low speed instead of cycling fully on/off. A variable floor multi-split ventilation system has 60 small zones, and the building shell is airtight and well-insulated with an ICF (insulated concrete form) construction technology. Occupancy controlled ventilation, lighting, and heating/cooling mimimize energy consumption with a rooftop photovoltaic system providing 5.5 kW of power.
