Wisconsin to Green State Buildings
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle signed an executive order in April 2006 supporting the greening of the state’s buildings. Citing the 6,200 facilities owned by the state, with replacement costs of $9.5 billion and annual energy costs of $125 million, Executive Order #145 called for a variety of measures, from high-performance standards to an integrated design process for all state buildings.
Based on what you have seen and read about this project, how would you grade it? Use the stars below to indicate your assessment, five stars being the highest rating.
New state facilities are to be 30 percent more efficient than required by commercial code, and all state buildings are to reduce energy use by 10 percent by fiscal year 2008 and 20 percent by fiscal year 2010. The order also calls on the Department of Administration to establish standards based on the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Rating System.
The text of the order is online at www.wisgov.state.wi.us.
