Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley has announced that four wind turbines will be erected on the roof of the Richard J. Daley Center. The machines, Aeroturbines, were invented by Bil Becker, a professor of industrial design at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and manufactured by Aerotecture International, Inc., based in Chicago (www.aerotecture.com).
Largely because they operate at a lower speed than propeller windmills, the turbines are silent and vibration-free, and are largely self-regulating and safe for birds, according to Aerotecture and the Chicago Department of Environment. The turbines are enclosed in cages without towers, offering flexibility in their architectural surroundings.
