Cree Acquires LED Lighting Fixtures
LED Lighting Fixtures (LLF), manufacturer of a breakthrough LED downlight, was acquired in March 2008 by Cree, Inc., a North Carolina-based manufacturer of LEDs. LLF’s products, including the LR6 recessed-can LED downlight, have been rebranded as Cree products, and the LLF organization is now called Cree LED Lighting Solutions, or Cree LLS. According to Gary Trott of Cree LLS, the acquisition will give his company access to Cree’s financial, technical, and marketing resources. “In the short term, Cree LLS will deliver on the previously announced products as planned,” Trott said. “In the longer term, the increased resources of Cree may open up new possibilities.”

When asked if the purchase by Cree will limit access to LEDs made by other LED manufacturers, Trott said that the company will be able to source LEDs as needed, although “Cree’s lighting-class LEDs continue to offer the highest performance in the industry.” The introduction of the company’s 4” LED downlight, the LR4, which was previously announced as becoming available in March 2008, has been pushed back to May 2008.
