Bill Pedersen Crafts Green Doghouse for Charity Auction

11/17/08

By Cody Adams

Every dog might have his day, but only one lucky New York City canine is going to have a sustainable one. The Animal Medical Center of New York invited three top architects to design high-concept animal habitats for the home, and William Pedersen FAIA of the highly respected architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox took doggy design to the next level. Based on Pedersen’s own design for the West Village’s One Jackson Square condominiums, the “One Jackson” doghouse will be auctioned at the annual “Top Dog Gala” with a starting bid of $15,000.

Great care was taken to make the 20 square foot ‘One Jackson’ the best doghouse ever made. Perhaps the only animal enclosure with its own green roof, the structure has natural ventilation and features a nautilus-like design that can be rotated seasonally to take advantage of cool breezes or guard against chill winds. The sustainable roof has a fully integrated drainage system, and also provides a naturally comfortable perch for the dog in temperate weather. The curvaceous form was inspired by dogs’ proclivity for circling three times before resting, and also by natural habitats that call to a dog’s deeper instincts.

Dogs might be colorblind, but one fortunate pooch is going to be seeing green, whether he knows it or not.
