Dozens of Eco-Products Get the Green Light from SCS

11/26/08

By Cody Adams

Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) announced last week at the 2008 Greenbuild International Conference that a bevy of new products have been certified as effective sustainability aides. These products include furniture from Steelcase Asia-Pacific, rubber tile flooring from Ecore International, windows from the Andersen Corporation, and a wood treatment process by Osmose.

SCS is a third-party assessment and certification corporation based in California. It serves a variety of industries: food and agriculture, forest management, fisheries, product manufacturing, and building design and construction. It also assists corporations in designing “social responsibility” programs. For products under review, SCS employs a range of certification categories, such as Indoor Advantage, FloorScore, Recycled Material Content, Environmentally Preferable Product, and Chain-of-Custody, among others.

In addition to recently green lighting dozens of new products—for a full list, visit the SCS Web site—the organization just announced that it has earned third-party accreditation status from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). This will enable SCS to initiate a CalCOMPliant program that verifies the compliance of manufacturers in reducing formaldehyde emissions from treated wood products. An important component of this program entails a strategic partnership with CARB-accredited organizations in China, a productive step in crafting higher environmental standards among industrial powers. SCS is the first group to receive this accreditation in California, and it will be the first U.S. organization to actively partner with CARB-certified labs in China.
