“Ecology.Design.Synergy” Exhibition Opens in Cambridge

09/10/07

By Russell Fortmeyer

Behnisch Architekten is no stranger to the Boston area. The Stuttgart, Germany-based firm, which also has an office in Los Angeles, designed Cambridge’s Genzyme Center, a lab that also happens to be a LEED Platinum project (see Genzyme Center ). More recently, the firm has embarked on a range of projects with the Stuttgart-based consulting firm, Transsolar ClimateEngineering, that represent some of the most progressive sustainable design approaches in contemporary architecture.

The fruits of this collaboration are on display in a joint exhibition, “Ecology.Design.Synergy,” that is currently at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, but is slated to travel around the United States through 2008. The exhibition features built work, such as the Norddeutsche Landesbank in Hannover, Germany, as well as planned projects like the Cultural District Riverfront Development for Pittsburgh. The show considers such things as the state of the environment and the quality of buildings, seen through the lenses of economics, population, politics, biology, materials, and scale, among others.

The exhibition was curated by Frank Ockert of ockert & partner in Stuttgart, with cooperation by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations and Galerie Aedes in Berlin. Stefan Behnisch, a principal of Behnisch Architekten, served on GreenSource’s editorial advisory board in 2007.

Exhibition Schedule:

August 22-October 3, 2007: at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design, Cambridge, MA

October 29, 2007-February 1, 2008: at the Yale School of Architecture, New Haven, CT
