Icynene, maker of the widely used and first open-cell polyurethane spray foam insulation of the same name, has launched a new product with some rapidly renewable content. Icynene LD-R-50 is formulated with a polyol derived from the castor plant—a shrub with two annual growing cycles that thrives on marginal land.
Although the company hasn’t released the exact formula, John Evans, codes and standards manager for Icynene, says that the product would contain a minimum 7% renewable content by weight. Like its petroleum-derived counterpart, Icynene LD-R-50 is a water-blown, HFC-free product that functions as an air barrier as well as insulation. According to Icynene, the new formula offers a slightly higher insulation value—R-3.7 vs. R-3.6 per inch—at a comparable cost. Visit www.icynene.com for more information.
