The U.S. Green Building Council’s Northern California (USGBC-NCC) chapter has chosen Berkley’s David Brower Center—named after the late environmental activist—as the recipient for the Green Building Super Heroes Award.
The Green Team Award recognizes outstanding vision and practice in the green building industry and was accepted by San Francisco-based firm WRT/Solomon E.T.C., which provided architectural services for the mixed-use project.
The project team has applied for LEED-Platinum certification, based on its incorporation of environmental and architectural principles such as daylighting, natural ventilation, solar hot water, and photovoltaic power generation. The Center combines housing, environmental education, and the arts by providing 97 apartments, a community arts space, and nearly 30,000 square feet of rental space for environmental nonprofits, in addition to a restaurant and subterranean parking area.
