Extra-Pak Ice

Extra-Pak Ice

Extra-Pak coils from EVAPCO provide the highest amount of ice build per foot of tube on the market, creating colder water that provides higher system efficiencies. Storing thermal cooling energy generated during off-peak electrical-demand periods for large buildings, industrial process, and data centers can contribute to and potentially meet cooling requirements. In conjunction with ice storage, smaller chillers can provide constant full-load operation at their highest efficiency, rather than larger units running sporadically at lower efficiencies. Additionally, using cooled primary air may allow 20 to 40 percent downsizing of air handlers, motors, ducts, and pumps due to lowered airflow requirements. D’Mand Hot Water Delivery System

D’Mand Hot Water Delivery System

Uponor (formerly Wirsbo) is now offering the D’Mand Hot Water Delivery System. Actuated by a push button or motion sensor at the point of use, a pump quickly delivers hot water to a fixture while sending the tepid water that’s been sitting in the pipes back to the hot-water tank. It’s switched off by a temperature sensor at the fixture. In addition to saving water, it saves energy, especially compared with continuous-circulation or timer-based hot-water loops. In retrofits, the cold-water pipe serves as the return line; in new construction, a third plumbing line is usually installed.Uponor; Apple Valley, MN.

Cambia Heat-Crafted Wood

Cambia Heat-Crafted Wood

Greenleaf’s Cambia chemical-free preserved wood can be used for any above-ground application. High-temperature processing in low-pressure, low-oxygen conditions stabilizes the wood and renders it indigestible by microbes and insects. Up to 80 percent of the energy required for the heat treatment is derived from gasses produced by the wood itself during the treatment. Cambia is available as decking, flooring, and millwork; it can be painted, stained, sanded, and disposed of like conventional wood and comes with a 25-year warranty. Cambia by Greenleaf; Kingston, NH. www.cambiawood.com; 866-960-9663.

OASys HybridAir Conditioner

OASys Hybrid Air Conditioner

Instead of compressors and refrigerants, the OASys from Speakman CRS uses direct and indirect evaporative cooling to provide energy-efficient air-conditioning. It works by running fresh outdoor air through a heat exchanger, followed by a water-saturated membrane that adds humidity and provides filtration. The SEER 40 Plus model uses up to 80 percent less energy than normal air-conditioners, requiring fewer than 600 watts to produce up to 3.5 tons of cooling. It can run on 110V AC, photovoltaic DC, or a combination of both. The system provides effective conditioning when humidity is 60 percent or less. Water use is 3 to 5 gallons per hour. Speakman CRS; New Castle, DE. www.oasysairconditioner.com; 800-537-2107.

Airblade Hand Dryer

Airblade Hand Dryer

The Dyson Airblade is the first, and so far the only, electric hand dryer to be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation under its Hygienic Commercial Hand Dryers protocol P335. The touch-free, 1400-watt unit uses highly pressurized air to blow water off users' hands during an energy-saving 12-second average cycle, operating at about 84 dB. If a user hasn’t removed their hands from the unit after 30 seconds, it shuts off. A replaceable HEPA filter removes 99.9 percent of the bacteria from the air used to dry hands. The die-cast aluminum casing has a scratchproof coating with a silver-ion antimicrobial treatment. Dyson B2B; Chicago, IL. www.dysonairblade.com; 888-397-6622.

Fire-Rated Wood-Veneer Panels

Fire-Rated Wood-Veneer Panels

S.J. Morse Company, manufacturer of custom architectural wood-veneer panels, is now offering fire-rated panels with FSC-certified veneers and cores. The cores, made with PyroBlock from Panel Source International, have an intumescent coating that expands and chars when subjected to heat, insulating and protecting the substrate from fire. Polyvinyl acetate (PVA, or white glue) is used to bond the veneers to the core. FSC must be specified. Most of S.J. Morse’s core options use 100 percent pre-consumer recycled content and binders that contain no added urea-formaldehyde. S.J. Morse Company; Capon Bridge, WV. www.sjmorse.com;

EcoLogic 1.28 GPFToilet

EcoLogic 1.28 GPF Toilet

Niagara Conservation manufactures the tamperproof, flapperless 1.28 gallon-per-flush EcoLogic high-efficiency toilet, suitable for 10- or 12-inch rough-ins. Without a flapper, it sidesteps the increased flush volume that can occur if a generic flapper replaces a low-flush toilet’s original equipment in the course of maintenance. The simple but unusual maintenance-free flushing system provides the added benefit of a sweat-free tank. The EPA WaterSense-certified EcoLogic evacuated 500 grams of solids under MaP (Maximum Performance) protocol testing, and its ADA-compliant version evacuated an impressive 800 grams. A 10-year warranty is offered on the components, with a lifetime warranty on the porcelain. Niagara Conservation Corp.; Cedar Knolls, NJ.
