Styrofoam SIS

Styrofoam SIS

Styrofoam SIS—structural insulated sheathing—from Dow Building Solutions provides wraparound insulation, a water-resistant barrier and drainage plane, and structural shear bracing (replacing OSB, wood let-in bracing, or metal T-bracing) in a single panel. The closed-cell polyisocyanurate foam core is sandwiched between a water-resistive outer surface and a structural inner layer. A half-inch-thick, 4-by-8-inch sheet weighs less than 16 pounds. These panels are available in 4-by-8, 9-, or 10-inch, in half- and one-inch thicknesses that respectively provide R-3 and R-5.5. To qualify as a water-resistive barrier, joints must be taped. Eighty percent postconsumer recycled content is claimed. Dow Chemical Co., Building Solutions; Midland, MI. www.styrofoam.com; 989-636-1000, 800-441-4369.

Lo/Mit-II Low-e Paint

Lo/Mit-II Low-e Paint

Lo/Mit-II is a silicone-emulsion heat-reflecting paint for interior use offering an emissivity of 0.21 to 0.26, depending on the substrate. This type of coating is typically applied to the underside of roof sheathing and is particularly helpful when retrofitting poorly insulated ceilings. Compared to similar products, Lo/Mit-II has an unusually small VOC content of 43 grams per liter. It installs with standard spray equipment, low-nap rollers, or fine-bristle brushes. Radiant barriers are more beneficial in reducing cooling loads than heating loads. SOLEC-Solar Energy Corp.; Ewing, NJ. www.solec.org;

GCS Modular Radiant Flooring Panels

GCS Modular Radiant Flooring Panels

GCS Modular Radiant Flooring Panels are 1.25-inch-thick, screw-down planks made with a lightweight concrete cast into postconsumer-recycled, high-impact polystyrene trays. PEX hydronic tubing fits into integral channels on the underside. One-third of the cement content is replaced with ground windshield glass and flyash. The panels, which weigh less than 8 pounds per square foot, respond more quickly to occupant thermostat adjustments than radiant-floor-heat delivery systems with higher mass. They avoid the moisture-loading and jobsite water release of poured-in-place radiant floors, install without adhesives, are reusable, and provide reduced sound transmission. GCS Radiant Heat Inc.; Williamsville, NY. www.GCSRadiantHeat.com; 716-634-1758.

Medite FR MDF

Medite FR MDF

Medite FR medium-density fiberboard (MDF) from SierraPine, for use in interior, non-structural applications where a Class A fire rating is needed, is back. Like the original product that was phased out in 2002, it uses an MDI binder and has no added formaldehyde. However, it now incorporates a non-toxic, proprietary borate fire retardant mixed in with the wood fibers—not a coating—so the panels can be cut, shaped, and sanded and still maintain their fire-retardant properties. Additionally, SierraPine has earned certification from SCS for using up to 100 percent recovered and recycled wood fiber for its MDF products. SierraPine Ltd.; Roseville, CA. www.sierrapine.com; 916-772-3422, 800-676-3339.

LifeSPACE Movable Wall System

LifeSPACE Movable Wall System

The LifeSPACE movable wall system for offices from Haworth eliminates the construction and demolition waste and the workspace disruption of traditional renovations. Designed for ease of installation and a look of permanence, LifeSPACE carries Indoor Advantage GOLD certification for low emissions from SCS. All wooden components may be specified from FSC-certified forests. Though optimized for use with Nexus access flooring, it will work with any flooring system. Vinyl cladding is an available option which GreenSpec does not recommend. Haworth Inc.; Holland, MI. www.haworth.com; 616-393-3000.
