PureWood PureWood chemical-free preserved wood is processed under very high temperatures and steam, which transform Southern yellow pine into a wood that is indigestible by insects or decay fungi. While energy-intensive, this thermal-modification process produces dimensionally stable wood that can be painted, stained, sanded, and disposed of like conventional wood. Suitable for outdoor above-ground and ground-contact applications, PureWood is available as decking, balusters, rails, posts, and fascia and comes with a 25-year warranty. Bay Tree Technologies; 8700 Trail Lake Dr. W. Ste 101; Memphis, TN. www.purewoodproducts.com; 888-575-4180. [ Reader Service: September 2008 CIRCLE 207] |

Airvac Vacuum Sewer Systems Airvac offers commercial, institutional, and municipal toilet systems that use vacuum technology, small-diameter piping, and just three pints of water per flush (or even less, depending on the type of installation). System design is highly flexible: The waste piping can be routed in any direction around ductwork, bulkheads, and other obstructions, including environmentally sensitive outdoor areas. Airvac’s commercial toilets look like traditional porcelain toilets; they also make a stainless-steel model. Airvac; 4217 N. Old U.S. 31, P.O. Box 528, Rochester, IN. www.airvac.com; 574-223-3980. SolarDuct PV/T SolarDuct PV/T is a combined thermal and photovoltaic rooftop solar collector for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. It preheats ventilation air before it enters the air handlers, reducing the heating requirements of fresh-air ventilation. A typical eight-unit array delivers up to 2000 cfm of heated ventilation air and 8 kW of heating. The thermal panels draw heat away from the mounted PV cells, increasing their efficiency by as much as 10 percent. Combining heat energy and PV in one footprint creates a simple, cost-effective, space-saving cogeneration system. Conserval Systems, Inc.; 4242 Ridge Lea Rd. No. 28, Buffalo, NY. www.solarwall.com; 716-835-4903.[ Reader Service: September 2008 CIRCLE 209] |

VRTX Cooling Tower Water Treatment VRTX is a non-chemical side-stream water-treatment system for cooling towers and process water. It uses hydrodynamic cavitation to induce dissolved calcium and carbonate ions to nucleate for removal by centrifugal separation. The inherent high pressures, temperatures, and shear also provide bacteria control and typically maintain an 8.5 or higher pH. Blowdown can be reduced by 40 percent and will generally be suitable for irrigation and other uses. Systems are sized and engineered for individual applications and conditions. PolyWhey Finish Vermont Natural Coatings uses a by-product of the dairy industry to make PolyWhey, an alternative to conventional polyurethane floor finishes. Using whey protein as the bonding agent, this product has a VOC level of less than 180 grams per liter (about 25 percent lower than the industry’s standard), contains no toxic heavy metals, and, according to the company, has twice the cured hardness of the average water-base finish. A gallon covers 500 to 600 square feet, applied by brush or spray gun with choices of semi-gloss or satin finish, and in five-gallon, gallon, and quart. The cans are made from recycled polypropylene.
