Turbo-Dri Hand Dryer

Turbo-Dri Hand Dryer

The Turbo-Dri uses a combination of heat and high-speed air to dry hands in less than 12 seconds, according to the company. The air temperature and speed are both adjustable, and generate between 68 and 116 cubic feet per minute of heated air using 1300 to 1600 watts. An infrared sensor activates the unit when hands are placed at the nozzle, and turns it off when hands are removed; a 60-second automatic shut off helps minimize misuse. Sound levels vary between 65 and 78 decibels, depending on settings. Made for heavy-duty applications, the unit’s body is one-piece stainless steel, finished in white porcelain enamel or with a satin or bright polished surface. American Specialties Inc.; Yonkers, NY. EcoBatt Fiberglass Insulation

EcoBatt Fiberglass Insulation

Knauf’s EcoBatt fiberglass insulation, which contains at least 30 percent post-consumer recycled bottle glass, uses a proprietary binder made with rapidly renewable materials instead of petroleum derivatives. The manufacturer maintains the composition of the biobased binder (called Ecose) as a trade secret—but whatever it is, it helped EcoBatt meet Greenguard Children and Schools and California’s Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) indoor air quality standards. EcoBatt has the same performance and cost as Knauf’s other fiberglass products, and is available in five configurations: unfaced, kraft-faced, foil-faced, FSK-25-faced, and a sill sealer. R-values range from 8 to 38, depending on density and thickness. Because no colorants are used, this fiberglass has a mottled brown appearance. Knauf Insulation; Shelbyville, IN. Phone 317-398-4434,

Insulating Window Quilt Shades

Insulating Window Quilt Shades

Window Quilts are insulating, edge-sealing, retractable window shades that reduce conductive heat loss while blocking air infiltration, light, and noise. The quilt, which includes two layers of polyester batting and a reflective vapor barrier, uses surface-mounted edge tracks to create a seal around the window. According to the company, the R-value of a standard insulated-glass window can improve from less than 2 to nearly 7; noise is reduced by as much as 35 percent; and condensation eliminated. The room-darkening quilts block 99.5 percent of light, but less opaque shading quilts are also available. Sizes range from 24-to-104 inches wide in one-inch increments, in lengths up to 144 inches. The color is off-white. Window Quilt; Brattleboro, VT.

Solar in a Box

Solar in a Box

Solar in a Box, from Ready Solar, is a pre-engineered and pre-assembled residential solar electric system that combines everything into one low-profile unit. Each panel has a separate inverter that converts low-voltage DC to AC—this means that if one panel becomes partially shaded, the rest of the system continues to operate at full capacity. Solar in a Box has a 25-year warranty on the panels and a 15-year warranty on the inverters, and system monitoring is provided for 5 years at no cost. Ready Solar’s partners include inverter manufacturer KACO Solar, and panel manufacturer Sharp Electronics. Ready Solar, Inc.; Redwood City, CA. Phone 650-646-3411; www.readysolar.com

Tarm Multi-Fuel Pellet Boilers

Tarm Multi-Fuel Pellet Boilers

The HS Tarm Multi Heat boiler from BioHeat USA burns either wood pellets or corn to achieve up to 91 percent efficiency. It has a continuously variable heat output that can modulate from 30 to 100 percent, so add-on hot-water storage isn’t needed. The nominal heat output ranges between 51,200 to 146,700 Btu per hour, depending on the model. Its fan draws between 300 and 460 watts, and a 220-volt system is needed for the feed auger.
