WES5 Tulipo Wind Turbine

WES5 Tulipo Wind Turbine

WES Canada, in partnership with manufacturer WES Netherlands, offers the Tulipo—a 2.5 kilowatt, grid-connected wind-powered generator designed with in-town facilities in mind: schools, gas stations, supermarkets, and the like. It’s an urban turbine. The specially designed blades and low operating speed contribute to the quieter-than-normal operation of this uniquely designed turbine, which starts turning at a minimum wind speed of 3 meters per second—0.1 miles per hour. WES Canada will package the Tulipo in batches of five for corporate customers. Larger 80- and 250-kilowatt commercial turbines are also available. WES Canada; Smithville, ON, Canada.

Girasol Sun-Tracking Louver Drive

Girasol Sun-Tracking Louver Drive

From Colt International in the U.K., the non-electric Girasol drive system for controllable shading louvers is powered only by the heat of the sun to achieve appropriate shading based on current solar conditions. Designed to install on any external controllable fin system, each noiseless, thermo-hydraulic Girasol drive can control over 500 square feet of louvers. The units’ slow movement prevents optical irritation from rapidly changing light levels. Using these drives when coupling shading with building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV)—i.e., louvers with PV cells on them—can increase solar power yields significantly. Operating temperatures range from –22 to 140 degrees F. See their website for North American distributors. Colt International, Ltd.; Hampshire, United Kingdom.

Conserv Refrigerator-Freezer

Conserv Refrigerator-Freezer

ConServ is a low-energy use, high-design refrigerator of Danish extraction (formerly sold under the name VestFrost) available in the U.S. from Equator Corporation. According to one dealer specializing in off-grid lifestyles, its measured daily energy use in a 77-degree F room was 900 watts—a couple hundred kilowatt-hours less per year than comparable units on the Energy-Star list (though this ‘fridge isn’t in that program). It uses CFC-free foam and refrigerant, has separate compressors for the refrigerator and freezer, and is built with all recyclable parts. With an adjusted volume of 12.6 cubic feet, it’s not cavernous; but at six-foot-seven, it sure is tall. Equator Corporation; Houston, TX. Phone 713-464-3422,

Aquatherm Greenpipe

Aquatherm Greenpipe

Most domestic water supply piping in North America is high-lifecycle-cost copper, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), or cross-linked polyethylene (PEX, a.k.a. XLPE). Another alternative—used in much of the rest of the world for over three decades and now available throughout the U.S.—is Aquatherm’s Greenpipe. This exceptionally strong polypropylene piping avoids solvents, glues, and open flames during installation by using electric heat fusion, resulting in a monolithic, PVC-free water supply system. In addition to Greenpipe, German manufacturer Aqautherm also offers Climatherm for HVAC use, and Lilac for reclaimed water systems. Dimensions range from ⅜ - to 10-inch equivalencies, and it has ICC approval. Aquatherm Inc., Orem, UT;

Ecopower MicroCHP

Ecopower MicroCHP

More than two thousand Ecopower MicroCHP units have been installed in Europe over the past five years, and now they’re available in North America from Marathon Engine Systems. CHP—combined heat and power—cogenerates heating and electricity, and this unit does it quietly and cleanly with natural gas or propane for residential or light commercial applications. Larger facilities can be served with multiple installations. More than 90 percent of the energy generated as heat and electricity is used. This system is best suited to buildings with hydronic heating, but it can be adapted to other types of heating. Marathon Engine Systems, East Troy, WI.

Jakob Trellis Systems

Jakob Trellis Systems

In addition to the general benefits of nature’s greenery, plants can help keep buildings and people cool, provide solar and glare control, and create visual interest. Swiss manufacturer Jakob—in business for over 100 years—produces attractive, yet rugged, stainless-steel cables and hardware that can be used to create durable trellis systems for seasonal or permanent vegetation that can screen and shade facades, roof areas, patios, or other outdoor (or indoor!) spaces. A trellis system can also make the most of small growing areas. The company provides helpful information on system design, plant selection, upkeep, and maintenance. Jakob Inc.; Delray Beach, FL.
