SolFocus Concentrating Photovoltaic system

SolFocus Concentrating Photovoltaic System

SolFocus makes concentrating PV systems for commercial power generation. The SF-1100S uses primary mirrors to capture sunlight, and secondary mirrors to concentrate that light at a ferocious 500 suns onto high-efficiency II-V galliumarsenide solar cells made with a germanium substrate. According to the company, these cells operate at 38 percent efficiency or more— compared to 13 to 19 percent for standard silicon PV. The concentrating arrays mount on monitored, remotemanaged, dual-axis trackers. High-wind and nighttime stow positions protect the unit. Listed by the California Energy Commission, it’s eligible for that state’s solar power rebates. SolFocus, Inc.; Mountain View, CA. 650-623-7100; www.solfocus.com [CIRCLE 91]

Textus commercial Textiles

Textus Commercial Textiles

Textus, a Momentum Group company, makes high-end textiles for corporate customers. This ISO 14001 company offers environmentally responsible options that include Terratex 100-percent recycled polyester (from pre-consumer sources), and MBDC Gold certified fabrics such as the antimony-free, recyclable Eco-Intelligent polyester and Climatex Lifecycle made from wool and ramie. The company’s Eco Wool fabrics are processed without pesticides; using biodegradable detergents that minimize water pollution; vegetable oil lubricants rather than mineral oil; and environmentally friendly dyes. The company claims 72 percent lower CO2 emissions compared with conventional wool products. Momentum Group; Irvine, CA. 949-833-8886, 800-366-6839; www.themomgroup.com [CIRCLE 92]

Spinwave Monitoring and Management

Spinwave Monitoring and Management

Spinwave offers highly scalable wireless resource monitoring and management systems. The wireless sensor network can integrate with building automation systems in large commercial applications to reduce energy consumption and improve occupant comfort. It’s particularly useful for retrofits or if a building’s architecture makes a wired system too impractical or expensive. For smaller applications, Spinwave’s browser-based energy management system takes advantage of the self-networking wireless product control and output capabilities to help optimize power, heating, and cooling in both commercial and residential spaces. Triton Stormwater Chambers

Triton Stormwater Chambers

Stormwater detention reduces downstream flooding and pollution by storing runoff and dispersing it slowly. And, increasingly, it’s the law. Triton’s stormwater chambers claim environmental credibility in other ways: they have more capacity per linear foot than most and are strong enough to be installed in tiers (less excavation); they weigh less per cubic foot of storage than most (lower transportation energy); and they’re made with soy oil (rather than petroleum). They’re also certified according to ISO 14044:2006 as a “carbon neutral product,” reducing greenhouse gases, CO2 emissions, and end-use site energy by 15 to 30 percent. Airfoil Sealed Electrical Boxes

Airfoil Sealed Electrical Boxes

Outlet boxes can be a significant source of leaking air that can increase space conditioning energy and contribute to moisture problems. Airfoil offers receptacle boxes designed to minimize air and moisture movement. After wires or cables are installed, low expansion foam is sprayed into integral sealing chambers. A perimeter flange also makes it easy to maintain an unbroken air barrier in the plane of the wall. The single, dual, and fan support boxes are PVC; the round outlet box, however, is made of PBT , which is more suitable for higher temperatures. Form-A-Drain Draining Footer Forms

Form-A-Drain Draining Footer Forms

CertainTeed’s multifunction Form-A-Drain is a permanent foundation-footing forming system, foundation drainage system, and sub-slab perimeter radon evacuation system made from recycled PVC. Its 12-foot-long extruded sections double as permanent formwork and drainage channels; the exterior vertical face is slotted to allow groundwater in, traveling to outlets at a standard drainage disposal area. The system can also be easily configured to function as an active or passive radon reduction system. This product eliminates the need for conventional wood forms, and its performance benefits—and the fact that it’s recycled material— mitigate concerns about PVC content. ClimaGuard Low-E Glass

ClimaGuard Low-E Glass

Careful glazing selection for specific applications (considering things like climate, orientation, and building type) is critical for optimal energy performance and occupant comfort. Guardian’s ClimaGuard 75/68 is a good choice for the solar-exposed sides of buildings in cold climates where both high solar gain and low heat loss are desired. A U-value of 0.28 (or in triple-pane applications as low as 0.15) keeps heat in, but still allows 75 percent of visible light and 68 percent of the sun’s heat through. This glazing meets or surpasses Energy Star’s northern zone requirements. Guardian Industries Corp.; Auburn Hills, MI. 248-340-1800; www.guardian.com [CIRCLE 97]

Alphaton and Longoton Terra Cotta

Alphaton and Longoton Terra Cotta

Used in the building industry for hundreds of years, terracotta cladding is inert and fireproof; resistant to freeze-thaw, corrosion, and salt water; and produced from widely available natural, inorganic materials. Shildan is the U.S. distributor of Alphaton and Longoton terra-cotta vented cladding from the German company Moeding. These double-leaf, hollow panels—available in heights from 12 to 24 inches, and widths from 36 to 118 inches—are easily installed and replaced. A variety of shapes are available in 18 colors. Energy-Efficiency Education Display

Energy-Efficiency Education Display

Knowledge is power. Better than that, more knowledge can mean less power. Quality Automation Graphics offers computer based energy displays that use information compiled from building automation and metering to show real-time performance data along with non-live information (like a building’s green features, environmental information and tips, current weather conditions, and company information). The web-based display can monitor gas, water, electricity, and other systems— knowledge that can be used by facilities managers to improve building performance, or as a teaching tool for students and occupants. Useful functions include comparing historical data with real-time usages, or creating “competitions” among multiple buildings. Quality Automation Graphics; Ankeny, IA. 888-965-3403; www.qagraphics.com [CIRCLE 99]
