Chute Source Recycling System Chute Source makes recycling systems for high-rise buildings that eliminate the necessity of bins on every level. The Multichute unit uses one access door and separate chutes for various recyclables and trash, while the Single Chute model has an electronically controlled intake panel with buttons for different types of materials—hydraulic cylinders with sorting flaps direct the contents into the chosen bin. Only one access door can be opened at a time, and the system can be locked down during bin replacement. Automatic sprinklers are at the top intake and on alternating floors, with a fire damper at the discharge. E-Krete Pavement Sealer E-Krete is a cementitious coating that seals and protects aging pavement without using petroleum-based ingredients. A mix of cement, quartz aggregate, and a latex adhesive, it flows into cracks and forms a ⅛ inch thick coating that bonds to asphalt, concrete, chip seal, and stone, protecting the surface from weather and wear. It can be applied in multiple coats for added durability; isn’t affected by UV, ice, oxidation, oil, or diesel fuel; and qualifies for LED heat island reduction points. It has a 10-year warranty and the approval of the FAA, EPA , and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. PolyCon Manufacturing; Madison, MS. 601-898-1024; www.polyconmfg.com [CIRCLE 101] |

Bionaire Dehumidifiers Indoor-air quality problems in buildings are often a result of excess moisture; and sometimes water needs to be removed from the air itself to help prevent mold and mildew. Bionaire makes residential-sized standalone dehumidifiers that significantly exceed Energy-Star criteria. Their 20- and 50-pint units respectively pull 1.38 liters and 2.02 liters of water per kWh out of thin air. Available at retail outlets both online and off, these dehumidifiers come with a washable nylon air filter and a disposable carbon odor filter. Bionaire offers a two-year warranty through Sunbeam Products. Jarden Corporation, Bionaire Brands; Boca Raton, FL. 914-967-9400; www.jarden.com |

Separett Villa Urine-Diverting Toilet With the acceptance of waterless urinals and the understanding that peak water is the new peak oil, is the U.S. ready for the next step? The Villa is a waterless, composting toilet that takes human waste ecology to another level. Waste separation results in minimized odor and increased capacity (more than three-quarters of human waste is urine). The diverted urine can be leached, drained, or used as a fertilizer—nearly all the nitrogen and half the phosphorous in human waste is in the urine. A small fan provides airflow, prevents pests, and dries the solids. Urine-diverting low-flush toilets are also available. Ecovita; Marstons Mills, MA. 978-318-7033; www.ecovita.net [CIRCLE 102] |

Turfstone Pervious Pavers R.I. Lampus makes Turfstone Paving Stones— pervious interlocking concrete pavers with diamond-shaped voids for driveways and parking areas that prevent surface runoff and erosion while providing a stable, grassy surface for light- and medium-duty vehicle traffic. These pavers are a little less than 16 by 24 inches, are just over 3 inches thick, and weigh 70 pounds each. According to the manufacturer, 32 percent of the cementitious material is fly ash. Following recommended installation guidelines and using site-appropriate bedding and joint sands ensure maximum onsite drainage and performance. R.I. Zurn Siphonic Roof Drain Systems Common in many countries, siphonic roof drains are still new to the U.S., but Zurn makes a variety of them for commercial structures. During rain events, negative pressure occurs in the drain pipe, and water gets removed at a higher rate than with gravity systems. (If there’s less than 2 inches of water, both gravity and siphonic action occur as needed.) Zurn’s drains contain baffles to eliminate the Coriolis Effect of rotating water, and can handle flow rates up to 704 gallons per minute. Siphonic drains do have to be carefully engineered, and may not meet all local codes. Zurn Industries, LLC; Erie, PA. 814-455-0921; www.zurn.com [CIRCLE 104] |

Wood Doctor WD-HE8000 The WD-HE8000 outdoor wood-fired boiler from The Wood Doctor Company burns cordwood cleanly at high temperatures to heat up to 8,000 square feet—single or multiple buildings. It has two burn chambers; the first evaporates moisture from the wood and creates combustion gasses while the second takes these gasses and adds superheated air, increasing the temperature to over 1800 degrees F. The high temperatures burn the wood nearly completely. An eight-hour average of 113,000 Btu/hour produces emissions of 6.1 grams/hour—below EPA ’s Phase II requirements for this kind of boiler. The WD-HE 8000 qualifies for a $1,500 Federal rebate program. The Wood Doctor Company; Stewiacke, NS, Canada. 902-895- 6663; www.wooddoctorfurnace.com [CIRCLE 105] |

Quantum Total Light Management Lighting-controls heavyweight Lutron offers a powerful integration of several of its individual products in the commercial Quantum Total Light Management system. Centrally automated dimmers, switches, and window shades optimize lighting conditions for ideal occupant comfort and productivity throughout an entire building—or just parts of one—in renovations or new construction. The system monitors and balances inputs from daylight and occupancy sensors, ballasts, keypads, and remote controls and then reports on lighting usage and product interactions, allowing performance tweaks. Operations are simplified, energy is saved, and occupants are satisfied. Lutron Electronics Co., Inc.; Coopersburg, PA. 610-282-6398; www.lutron.com [CIRCLE 106] |

Radiance Wood Decking Extending the service life of wood products reduces demands on our forests, and Radiance Decking can help. Exposure to very high temperatures—up to 480 degrees F—under highly controlled conditions makes it resistant to insects and decay. The process is energy intensive but poison-free; it darkens the wood, and reduces shrinkage, checking, and swelling. An acrylic sealer minimizes fading, though it makes painting or staining more difficult. Radiance is suitable for ground contact, and is available as balusters, posts, fence rails, and fascia board. These products carry a 20-year warranty. Radiance Wood Products; Germantown, TN. |
